The iTax login is where every real interaction with the Kenya Revenue Authority begins. iTax is KRA's online portal for tax matters: filing your annual return, paying what you owe, and managing the details attached to your PIN. Whether you are a salaried employee filing once a year or a business owner with monthly obligations, the door is the same: itax.kra.go.ke.
This guide covers both official ways to sign in, what the security stamp is for, and what to do the moment you are inside, because logging in is only useful if you know the deadlines that come next.
What you need before you log in
Have three things ready:
- Your KRA PIN, or your National ID number (both are accepted; the routes are below)
- Your iTax password
- The security stamp: the small verification image displayed on the login page, whose characters you must type correctly along with your credentials
If you have a PIN but have never used iTax, your credentials come from the registration process. Our guide to KRA Pin Registration Online walks through that from the start.
Route 1: PIN or User ID and password
This is the standard login route:
- Open itax.kra.go.ke in your browser.
- Enter your PIN or User ID.
- Enter your password.
- Type the security stamp characters exactly as they appear on screen.
- Submit, and you land on your iTax dashboard.
The security stamp is a simple bot check: it confirms a human is signing in. Type it carefully. If the stamp is wrong, the login bounces even when your password is perfect, and it is the first thing to recheck when a login fails.
Route 2: the National ID route
KRA also supports signing in with your National ID number instead of your PIN or User ID, and KRA's own official channels confirm this is a supported route, not a workaround. The mechanics are the same: enter your National ID number in place of the PIN, then your password and the security stamp as usual.
If one route refuses to cooperate, try the other before anything else. The two lead into the same account, and a successful login either way puts you on the same dashboard.
Once you are in: filing your return
The single most important thing iTax is used for is the annual return, and the rules around it are simple but unforgiving:
- Every PIN holder files a return every year, even if you had no income at all. A year with zero earnings still needs a NIL return.
- The filing window runs from 1 January to 30 June. Filing early in the window beats racing the deadline.
- If your return shows tax due, generate the payment slip inside iTax, then pay at any of the appointed banks or via M-PESA paybill 222222, using the PRN on the slip so the payment lands against the right account.
One number worth knowing while you file: resident individuals claim personal relief of KES 28,800 per year, which reduces the tax you actually owe.
Login problems worth checking first
Most failed iTax logins come down to three ordinary things, all fixable in a minute:
- A mistyped security stamp. It rejects the login even when the password is correct, so retype it slowly.
- The wrong route. If the PIN route stalls, switch to the National ID route; both are official and both reach the same account.
- The wrong address. The official portal is itax.kra.go.ke, so make sure that is where you are signing in rather than a lookalike page.
Deadlines and penalties
Miss the 30 June deadline and the penalties are automatic. KRA states them plainly on its official individual income tax page:
- Late filing: 5% of the tax due or KES 2,000, whichever is higher.
- Late payment: a further 5% penalty plus 1% interest per month, until the tax is paid.
The late-payment penalty comes on top of the late-filing penalty, which is why filing on time, even a NIL return that takes minutes, is always the cheaper move.
